My internship with the Park Silly Market was quite the experience. I have always really loved the Park City area and jumped at the opportunity to work there. From the name, Zero Waste, I had known this wasn’t going to be an office or assistant type job, which made me even more interested. I’ve never considered myself as the scholarly type, the type to impress through a fancy paper (resume) or physical appearance. I shine through hands-on work that gets me intimately involved in the project and face-to-face work so I can see the results while they are happening. Working against man-made waste first hand seemed like a great way to explore this avenue and see if it was something I was passionate enough about to pursue as a career.
Overall the experience was informative about the ratio of people who cared to recycle, weren’t knowledgeable, or just thought it was absurd. It was interesting to watch the children come up with their plates, read the labels and sort everything perfect, while their parents came up saying, “is there just one for trash I can put all of this in?” Most people would do it just because we were there and we helped make it easy enough. I’d like to think our presence helped people to recognize an alternative to dumping everything into the trash and I hope it made them feel good to recycle what they could, like it does me. Although I realized waste and garbage isn’t the sector of sustainability I would like to go into, I did realize that what I find most important is making people aware of a better way to live their lives and to show how our actions can affect the world beyond our little bubble. My internship was a great experience that taught me long and hard work, teamwork and people skills, and gave me an understanding of how the rest of the world may react to the green movement when it’s in their face. I feel more empowered and prepared to take on the world and the people in it to help us all toward a more sustainable and happy future.
